Perimenopause Informed Psychotherapy

May 28th 12pm-1pm EST

1.0 CEU For Ohio Social Workers, Counselors and Marriage & Family Therapists

Perimenopause is not just a medical transition—it is a psychological, emotional, and identity-shaping experience that often shows up first in the therapy room. Yet many clinicians are not trained to recognize how hormonal fluctuations during this stage can directly influence mood, anxiety, cognition, and nervous system regulation. As a result, clients are frequently misunderstood, or treated without consideration of the underlying hormonal context. This training introduces a framework for perimenopause-informed psychotherapy, helping clinicians integrate an understanding of hormonal variability into assessment, case conceptualization, and treatment planning. Participants will explore how shifting estrogen and progesterone levels can contribute to symptoms such as irritability, anxiety, depressive symptoms, sleep disruption, brain fog, and emotional reactivity—and how these symptoms interact with life-stage stressors like caregiving, shifting identity, and changing relationships. Grounded in a nervous-system-informed and feminist approach, this session will offer practical ways to bring perimenopause awareness into the therapy room. Clinicians will learn how to incorporate psychoeducation, normalize clients’ experiences without pathologizing, and support women in reconnecting with their bodies and needs during this transition. The training will also address when and how to collaborate with medical providers to ensure comprehensive care. This training is designed for therapists, social workers, counselors, and other helping professionals who want to provide more attuned, accurate, and empowering care to women navigating midlife transitions.
