A is for Asexuality: Deepening our Understanding
Continuing Education for Mental Health Professionals
Service Description
A is for Asexuality: Deepening our Understanding of Asexuality Asexuality is often misunderstood, overlooked, or unintentionally pathologized—even in the therapy room. This CEU invites clinicians to build a more nuanced understanding of asexuality and the diversity of experiences across the ace spectrum. We’ll unpack the differences between sexual attraction, romantic attraction, libido, arousal, behavior, and pleasure—and challenge some of the assumptions we may not even realize we carry about sex, relationships, intimacy, and what a “healthy” life is supposed to look like. We’ll also explore the real-world experiences that can impact the mental health of asexual clients, including stigma, minority stress, social isolation, and relationship challenges, while considering how therapists can offer support without treating asexuality itself as something that needs to be explained, fixed, or changed. Finally, we’ll look at asexuality through a trauma-informed lens—exploring how to thoughtfully differentiate trauma-related changes in sexuality from asexual identity while centering autonomy, consent, safety, and the client’s own understanding of themselves. Come ready to learn, reflect, challenge assumptions, and expand what affirming care can look like
